As the Sankalpa Sikha Yatra came to an end, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader, Akhil Gogoi said that the people of Assam will throw the BJP-led government into the Brahmaputra if they pass the “anti-Assamese”Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Speaking to InsideNE, Akhil Gogoi said, “The 1.9 crore Hindu Bangladeshis that will come to Assam after the Bill is passed will destroy the Assamese cultures and bring the Assamese language to a stage of extinctions. No one in the state should support the bill and each responsible Assamese should press the government to dump the bill.”
Gogoi added, “In order to let the government know that the people of Assam stand united against the anti-Assamese bill, we organised the Sankalp Sikha Yatra. The government even tried to obstruct the protest by imposing section 144 CrPC but they failed as a massive number of people came to protest against the government’s step to bring in more Hindu Bangladeshis.”
Gogoi further said that the government has completely failed as they did not stand to their commitments they made to the people of Assam.
He stated, “The government must withdraw the bill or else they will face the wrath of the people. We will throw the government into the Brahmaputra if they pass the bill. The government needs to know that the Hindu Bangladeshis won’t Assam by any means.”
He claimed that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is just another issue that is targeted to make an impact among the Bengali community as well as West Bengal but it seems to be backfiring. Even the Bengalis who love Assam have opposed the bill.
“The only people who are supporting the bill are the ones who illegally came to Assam after 1971”, he added.
AJYCP president Palash Changmai said, “The proposed Bill is actually the final coffin nail of Assam as after it will convert the entire Assamese community into a minority in their own state. We cannot let that happen at any cost.”
He added, “The government itself has gone against the democracy by blocking and detaining our people from various places in the state. The government seems to be attempting to block our voices regarding the settlement of Hindu Bangladeshis and the Bill as the Panchayat elections are coming.”
