Hailakandi, December 4, 2018:
International Day of Persons with Disabilities or World Disability Day was observed in different schools across Hailakandi district on Monday.
The day is observed globally by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the planet. The observance of the day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
The event was observed at HCMM Girls' High School. Delivering an enlightening speech on the occasion, Headmaster Rita Chanda urged the students to encourage the differently-abled persons by lending a helping hand and not to show pity or sympathy citing examples of Helen Keller, Sudha Chandran and others who climbed the ladders of success despite being born with disabilities. She also encouraged the differently-abled students of the school to carve a niche for themselves in society.
The day was observed at Lakshirbond HS Madrassa in a befitting manner. Principal S.A. Laskar expressed his views regarding Divyang persons and their rights. SMDC president and renowned social worker Kabir Ahmed explained the finer points on the significance of the day. Officials from the District Legal Cell Authority and from District Bar Association, Hailakandi, Advocate Kamrul Islam threw light on the 'Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016'.
The event was held at Panchgram Town High School with Headmaster AS Choudhury initiating the proceedings of the day's event urging the society to promote rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of development. Highlighting on this year's theme 'Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality', teachers B.Roy and MA Laskar, in their speeches, exhorted everyone to reaffirm commitment to work together for a better world that is inclusive, equitable and sustainable for persons with disabilities. Students of the school participated in the event with great enthusiasm by making posters and placards.
The event was also observed at GSM HS, Lala and Nityanandapur High School.
