10 smuggled cattle seized, suspected Bangladeshi detained at India–Bangladesh border

Ten smuggled cattle were seized and a suspected Bangladeshi national was detained by local residents at Koraikandi in Katigora, near the India–Bangladesh border in Assam’s Cachar district on Tuesday night.

According to police, local people intercepted the suspect while he was allegedly attempting to transport the cattle from Katigora’s Koraikandi area into Bangladesh. Acting on a tip-off, residents apprehended the man and seized the animals, later handing both over to police.

Locals have alleged that an organised cattle-smuggling syndicate has been operating along the Cachar sector of the India–Bangladesh border for a long time. The smuggling reportedly takes place at night to avoid detection.

Residents claim the syndicate is led by Badrul, a member of the Village Defence Party from Rajatilla in Katigora. They allege Badrul’s network has been routinely transporting cattle into Bangladesh under the cover of darkness, despite repeated complaints to authorities.

Police have begun investigating the incident, and the detained suspect is being questioned to uncover further details about the smuggling network.
