16 cattle carcasses found behind in Naharkatia; MLA Taranga Gogoi demands tough action

Tension gripped the Naharkatia Legislative Assembly constituency in Dibrugarh district after cattle remains were discovered in a forested area behind an under-construction establishment in the Bandhadhari–Hajua Pathar locality.

According to local sources, as many as 16 severed cattle heads along with hides and legs were found dumped in the jungle area, triggering outrage among residents and raising serious concerns over alleged cattle theft and illegal slaughter activities in the region. The incident has created a charged atmosphere in the locality.

Soon after the discovery, the district administration and police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Using a JCB excavator, authorities cleared the surrounding bushes as part of the preliminary investigation and later buried the recovered remains as per procedure.

On February 12, Naharkatia MLA Taranga Gogoi visited the site to assess the situation firsthand. He stated that a thorough investigation would be carried out and assured that stringent action would be taken against those found responsible.

The MLA also directed the administration to strengthen security arrangements in the area and ensure that law and order is maintained.

Local residents have alleged that nearly 150 cattle have gone missing from the area over the past one and a half months, claiming that remains were frequently found in the same forest stretch. Villagers have demanded immediate steps to curb cattle theft and crack down on any illegal activities operating in the vicinity.

The administration, however, maintained that the investigation is being conducted from all angles and emphasized that no community would be targeted. Officials stated that those responsible would be identified and dealt with strictly under the law. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incident.

Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
