21 schoolgirls hospitalised in Assam's Dhubri with suspected heat stroke

Twenty-one schoolgirls were hospitalised after they fell ill at a residential hostel in Assam's Dhubri district on Friday evening, June 26, with health officials suspecting heat stroke-like symptoms caused by extreme weather conditions.

The incident occurred around 7.30 p.m. at a girls' hostel in Golakganj, where students from different age groups reportedly began experiencing severe physical distress.

The hostel authorities immediately shifted the students to the Golakganj Primary Health Centre. After receiving first aid, all 21 were referred to the Dhubri Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment as their condition was initially reported to be critical.

Health officials and the school administration monitored the students through the night.

Jyoti Kumar Das, Joint Director of Health Services, Dhubri, said the illness was believed to have been triggered by the prevailing heatwave conditions.

"All the students were in visible distress. We assume that these difficulties may have occurred due to heat stroke-like symptoms brought on by the excessively hot weather," Das said.

Officials said there was no evidence of food poisoning or contamination, and no signs of any other major health outbreak were detected at the hostel.

Most of the students responded well to treatment and were discharged from the hospital on Saturday morning following medical evaluation.

Officials said an inquiry into the hostel's living conditions and ventilation during the ongoing heatwave is likely to be conducted to prevent similar incidents in the future.
