AAP MP Sanjay Singh slams Centre for failing to provide adequate assistance to flood-hit Assam
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has accused the Centre of failing to provide adequate assistance to Assam amid the ongoing flood crisis and demanded that the floods be declared a national disaster.
Addressing a press conference in Sivasagar, Singh said the flood situation in Assam was extremely distressing and called for immediate central intervention to support the affected population.
Singh said he had visited flood-affected areas of Assam with his team for the past three years and claimed that the condition of flood victims remained extremely difficult, with many people losing their homes and belongings.
Questioning the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the ongoing crisis, Singh said political leaders frequently visit Assam during elections and promise measures to make the state flood-free, but questioned their presence when people are facing a major disaster.
The AAP MP said he had written to Prime Minister Modi seeking the declaration of the Assam floods as a national disaster. He also demanded a substantial financial package for people affected by the floods.
Singh also called for an immediate halt to illegal mining, arguing that the issue needed to be addressed as part of efforts to tackle Assam's recurring flood problem.
He urged the Centre to provide immediate assistance to flood victims and take long-term measures to address the causes contributing to the state's recurring flood crisis.
