AASU on Zubeen Garg case: “If BJP rules both Delhi and Dispur, why is the double engine govt protesting on the streets?”

All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) President Utpal Sharma has issued a strong statement demanding justice for late musical icon Zubeen Garg, while sharply criticising the ruling BJP government for what he termed as political doublespeak.

Sharma said it has already been a month since the untimely demise of the “beloved artist of our hearts,” yet the people of Assam are still waiting for justice. “Millions of admirers are living each day in pain — for them, justice must prevail,” he said, asserting that the probe into Garg’s death must be transparent and uncompromising.

He stressed that justice means “a strong and foolproof case so that the culprits cannot escape through the loopholes of the law.” Sharma further added, “Only when exemplary punishment is delivered can we truly say that the artist of our hearts has received justice. Until that happens, our movement will continue.”

Criticising the state government, Sharma questioned the BJP’s protest rallies despite being in power both at the Centre and in the state. “They call themselves a Double-Engine Government — BJP in Delhi and BJP in the State. Yet, even while being in power, the ruling party is out protesting on the streets. They should answer two questions: against whom are they protesting, and from whom are they seeking justice?” he said.

Taking aim at the government’s narrative, Sharma remarked, “They are trying to create a narrative that ‘the judiciary will deliver justice.’ But are we naïve children? The judiciary can only deliver justice when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) files a strong chargesheet based on solid evidence — and legally, the SIT functions under the Home Department.”

He accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of exposing the reality that “there is no real movement in Assam anymore.” Sharma added, “AASU has always maintained that Assam achieves nothing without a movement. Ironically, the ruling party’s own protest on the streets has proven that — without a people’s movement, neither justice nor change is possible in Assam.”

Sharma also denounced attempts to divide fans into “real” and “fake” camps. “Such divisive statements cannot and should not affect a student organisation,” he said. “To love Zubeen Garg, one does not need caste, religion, or political ideology — only a heart that truly values art and justice.”

As the state continues to mourn Zubeen Garg, AASU’s message remains clear: the call for justice will not fade until transparency, accountability, and truth are delivered.
