AASU president turns groom’s "xokhi" at traditional Assamese wedding, leads key rituals
The festive sentiment of a beloved Bihu lyric — “Alohi hoi jam ne, dora xaaji jam ne, dorar logot xokhi hoi tumake jukam” — found a real-life echo at a traditional Assamese wedding, where All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) President Utpal Sharma stepped into the role of the groom’s cherished companion (Xokhi) under the sacred wedding canopy in Assam’s Bokakhat.
The groom, Mriganka Mayur Garg, is not just a former AASU leader but also a long-standing associate and confidante of Sharma. Garg, who now serves as an administrative officer with the Government of Assam, was surrounded by close friends as he embarked on this significant milestone of his life.
In keeping with age-old Assamese customs, Sharma accompanied the groom from his family home, taking active part in the mangalik rituals, ceremonies believed to purify and sanctify the wedding proceedings. Standing beside his friend at each step, Sharma symbolised the deep bond the duo has shared since their student leadership days.
After completing the rituals, the AASU President led the groom’s entourage toward the bride’s reception venue, where traditional songs, warm welcomes, and ceremonial observances awaited them.
Speaking to the media, Sharma described it as a rare and heartfelt experience, one that blended friendship, tradition, and cultural pride into a single memorable moment. He added that the groom’s family has always considered him their “second son,” making the occasion even more special.
