AASU President Utpal Sarma slams Marmita Mitra over distortion of Zubeen Garg’s songs at Bihu event
All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) President Utpal Sarma has strongly criticised singer Marmita Mitra over the alleged distortion of songs by renowned Assamese artist Zubeen Garg during a Bihu function, calling it unacceptable and disrespectful to the original compositions.
Speaking to the media, Sarma said that while artists are free to perform in their own style, no one should attempt to alter or misrepresent the essence of Zubeen Garg’s music and creations. He emphasised that such acts undermine the originality and cultural value of the songs.
Referring specifically to Marmita Mitra’s performance, Sarma termed it an act of “audacity and irresponsibility,” and asserted that this should be the last instance of such behaviour. He urged performers to maintain respect for original works and refrain from distorting them in the name of creativity.
The remarks have triggered discussions in cultural circles, with many stressing the need to preserve the authenticity of Assamese music, especially during traditional festivals like Bihu.
