Abhayapuri top priority for AGP in alliance talks: Assam minister Keshab Mahanta
Assam Cabinet minister Keshab Mahanta on February 22 announced that Abhayapuri constituency will be a priority in alliance seat-sharing talks ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Addressing party workers and supporters at “Sankalp Samaroh”, held at Gandhi Maidan in Abhayapuri under Assam’s Bongaigaon district, Mahanta struck a confident note, underscoring Asom Gana Parishad’s organisational preparedness and political momentum in the region.
In a key announcement, the AGP Working President said the Abhayapuri Assembly constituency would be given due importance during seat-sharing negotiations within the ruling alliance. While refraining from specifying the number of seats the party would contest in the 2026 elections, he made it clear that discussions are still underway and a final decision is yet to be taken.
“The question of how many seats AGP will contest has not been finalised. Talks within the alliance are ongoing,” Mahanta said, indicating that the party is carefully calibrating its strategy for the high-stakes polls.
Taking a swipe at the opposition Indian National Congress, Mahanta alleged that the party has failed to function in a disciplined and cohesive manner. He asserted that Congress has little political ground to stand on in the 2026 Assembly elections, suggesting that internal disarray has weakened its prospects.
