The All BTC Minority Students' Union (ABMSU) staged a massive protest in Bedlangmari, Kokrajhar, on Tuesday, demanding an immediate halt to the ongoing eviction drives across Assam. The organization also urged the state government to ensure proper rehabilitation of families already displaced.
The protest began with a rally in the Bedlangmari market area and culminated in a sit-in on the main road, where demonstrators raised strong slogans condemning the state’s eviction policy. Over a hundred activists and leaders of ABMSU took part in the protest, intensifying the atmosphere with anti-government chants.
Addressing the media during the demonstration, ABMSU Central General Secretary Jaidul Islam made a series of sharp allegations. He accused the BJP-led Assam government of disproportionately targeting minority communities, particularly Muslims, through eviction drives.
“Since the BJP came to power, many minority families have been made homeless. This is a deliberate attempt to push Muslims out of Assam,” Islam claimed. He further stated that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's policies are “systematically reducing Muslims to second-class citizens.”
Challenging the CM’s assertion that the evictions are meant to remove illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, Islam said, “Let the government prove that even one of the evicted persons is Bangladeshi. By mislabeling citizens as foreigners, the CM is disrupting communal harmony.”
ABMSU leaders accused the government of violating constitutional principles, stating that the Chief Minister is governing “in the style of Hitler.”
The organization has issued a warning that if rehabilitation measures are not taken immediately, it will organize a larger demonstration in New Delhi on July 21 and 22.
In a related statement, ABMSU Central Executive President Moinuddin Ali raised concerns about the potential backlash during the upcoming census. “If Bengali-origin people boycott Assamese as their language in the census, it may result in Assamese people becoming a minority in their own state,” he warned.
Drawing a historical parallel, he concluded, “Even after the Holocaust, Jews were not destroyed. Similarly, Muslims will not be destroyed they will grow stronger.”
