ABSU demands CBI probe into Zubeen Garg’s death, warns of major public uproar

The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the mysterious death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, warning that failure to deliver a clear and transparent investigation could lead to a major statewide upheaval.

Addressing a press conference in Kokrajhar on Sunday, October 12, ABSU leaders expressed deep anguish and frustration over what they termed as the authorities’ “unsatisfactory and unconvincing” handling of the case so far.

“The people’s anger is real and will not fade until justice is achieved,” the union stated, emphasizing that the public is losing faith in the ongoing investigation.

ABSU leaders raised serious questions, asking, “Why was Zubeen Garg killed, and who is responsible?” They alleged that the singer was taken from his hotel to the river and made to swim without a life jacket, despite clear medical advice against such activity. The union further claimed that Zubeen was pushed into the water, calling it an act of deliberate negligence that demands an impartial inquiry.

Expressing disappointment with the response from Munna Prasad Gupta, head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Special DGP, ABSU asserted that his explanations lacked clarity and failed to address the core concerns surrounding the case.

The student body also warned that the investigation must not be allowed to fade away like the controversial Junmoni Rabha case, which they alleged was left unresolved.

ABSU reiterated that the people of Assam stand united in seeking the truth behind the death of Zubeen Garg — a revered cultural icon who sang more than 38,000 songs in 40 languages, and whose untimely demise has left a deep void in the state’s artistic and emotional landscape.

The union concluded its statement with an urgent appeal for speedy and transparent justice, asserting that any attempt to suppress the truth will only intensify public resentment.
