“After BPF came into power, destruction has started again in Bodoland”: Pramod Boro
Pramod Boro on Friday, March 6, said that the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) may contest all 15 constituencies in the Bodoland Territorial Region independently, adding that a final decision on whether to fight alone or as part of the NDA will be announced within the next few days.
Addressing a gathering during a peace motorcycle rally organised by the party at Kajolgaon in Assam's Chirang district, Boro said people across the region are urging UPPL to contest the elections independently, expressing confidence that the party could win 10–12 of the 15 seats.
Boro alleged that the region has witnessed growing unrest in the past four months following the formation of BPF's government in the BTR. He claimed incidents of houses being burnt, communal tensions, distrust and social divisions have surfaced, which were largely absent during the five years of UPPL-led administration.
Highlighting the sacrifices made by the Bodo community, Boro said nearly 8,000 Bodo people have lost their lives over the years in various movements, but many issues concerning the community still remain unresolved.
He further alleged that Bodo youths who secured government jobs during the UPPL tenure are now being targeted, while around 1,200 teacher posts remain vacant even after four months of the new administration. “If we were in power, appointment letters would have been issued within ten days,” he claimed.
Boro also expressed concern over what he described as a deteriorating social environment in the region, alleging that illegal gambling activities and syndicate operations have increased in certain areas, including Srirampur.
He said the UPPL leadership is actively discussing ways to address these issues and reaffirmed that the party will continue to work for peace, development and stability in the region.
Earlier in the day, a large peace motorcycle rally was organised by the youth wing of UPPL covering the 19 No. Sidli–Chirang Assembly Constituency. Several senior leaders of the party participated in the rally ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
Responding to a question on filing nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat, Boro said he has submitted his nomination as a UPPL candidate and would seek support from leaders of other parties if the election becomes contested; otherwise, it may conclude unopposed.
