AGP-BJP alliance rooted in Assam Movement, united stand against infiltration: Atul Bora

With the 2026 Assam Assembly elections approaching, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president and Assam minister Atul Bora on December 31 said the coming months would be crucial for consolidating regional political power in Dispur, asserting that the party will intensify efforts to strengthen its organisational base and advance its vision of an Atmanirbhar Assam.

Addressing party workers, Bora said the AGP will roll out programmes centred on institution-building and income generation at the household level to deepen grassroots empowerment across the state. He stressed that the party would work with full force to expand its reach and relevance ahead of the elections.

Taking a sharp political stance, Bora described the Congress-led UPA as AGP’s principal political adversary. Recalling the Assam Agitation, he said 855 people had lost their lives during the movement when Congress was in power. “That is why the UPA is our main enemy,” he said, reiterating that AGP remains firmly aligned with the BJP-led NDA.

Bora said AGP has been part of the NDA since 2020 and has consistently contested elections alongside the alliance. He recalled that AGP and BJP fought the 2016 Assembly elections together when the NDA formed the government in Assam, and again jointly contested the 2021 polls.

On the issue of delimitation, the AGP chief said the exercise has been completed while maintaining the total number of Assembly seats at 126. He underlined that infiltration has led to significant demographic changes in Assam and said delimitation had long been a key demand of AGP. “The Central Government has carried out delimitation, and politically it has benefited us,” he said.

Bora also highlighted the party’s focus on youth participation, saying AGP is prioritising the induction of new and young faces into politics to strengthen its future leadership.

Explaining AGP’s continued alliance with the BJP, Bora said the BJP had supported the Assam Movement and shared AGP’s commitment to stopping infiltration. “Infiltration must be stopped once and for all. AGP has been demanding the strengthening of the second line of defence to effectively seal the border,” he said.

He further said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has entrusted him with overseeing the Assam Accord department, adding that work related to the implementation of the Accord is being carried out with full force.
