AGP stakes claim to newly formed Tihu seat as Assam 2026 poll activity intensifies

As the 2026 Assam Assembly elections draw closer, political activity has intensified across constituencies, with both ruling and opposition parties holding back-to-back meetings. In Nalbari district, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP, has strongly staked its claim over the newly formed Tihu Assembly constituency.

AGP central general secretary and party ticket aspirant Dilip Kumar Das stated that the Tihu constituency should be allotted to AGP in the spirit of alliance. He asserted that the party has a strong organisational base in the region, which comprises areas from the erstwhile Barama, Patacharkuchi, and Dharmapur constituencies. Leaders elected from these constituencies had previously gone on to become Cabinet ministers in the Assam government, he stated.

Das said he has been associated with the Asom Gana Parishad since its inception and has served the party for the past 25 years. He expressed confidence that if given the opportunity by the central leadership, he would continue to serve the people of Tihu.

Describing Tihu as a constituency rooted in regionalism and secular values, Das appealed to the BJP to leave the seat for AGP under the alliance arrangement. He further remarked that voters would see the party’s elephant symbol on the ballot paper in Tihu this time.

Meanwhile, BJP ticket aspirant Trinayan Barman has been actively strengthening his base in the constituency. Assam Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has also been seen engaging with the public in Tihu. Whether the BJP will concede the seat to its ally AGP remains to be seen as the alliance equations unfold ahead of the polls.

The political atmosphere surrounding the 2026 Assembly elections is gradually becoming more intense and competitive.
