AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal announces Rs 1 crore flood relief for Assam

As the flood situation in Assam continues to deteriorate, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal has announced a flood relief package of up to Rs 1 crore, including an immediate emergency allocation of Rs 50 lakh through the Ajmal Foundation to assist people affected by the ongoing disaster.

In a statement issued on July 22, Ajmal expressed concern over the worsening flood conditions across the state, noting that several rivers and tributaries are flowing above the danger mark, resulting in widespread inundation and displacement.

To assess the situation on the ground and oversee relief efforts, Ajmal is scheduled to visit the flood-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat on Wednesday.

The Ajmal Foundation has earmarked Rs 50 lakh for immediate relief measures, while Ajmal said the total assistance could be increased to Rs 2 crore depending on the scale of damage and the evolving flood situation. He assured that the foundation would extend all possible support to affected families irrespective of political affiliation.

According to the statement, volunteers of the Ajmal Foundation have already begun distributing cooked food, dry rations and other essential relief materials in several flood-hit areas of Upper Assam.

The announcement comes as the flood situation in Assam remains critical. According to the latest report released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 21 more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 31.

Among the latest fatalities, Sivasagar recorded 13 deaths, followed by five in Charaideo, two in Golaghat and one in Jorhat.

Floodwaters have affected more than 5.64 lakh people across 16 districts, including Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Hojai, Nagaon, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Tinsukia and Karbi Anglong.

ASDMA said the floods have inundated 872 villages across 44 revenue circles, while 24,210 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged, causing extensive damage to crops and livelihoods.

Sivasagar continues to be the worst-affected district, with more than 3.59 lakh people impacted, followed by Jorhat with 87,662 affected residents, Charaideo with 72,646, Dibrugarh with 18,615 and Golaghat with 16,799.
