AIUDF loses ground in Assam's Bongaigaon as over 500 leaders join Congress

Assam's Bongaigaon district is witnessing a steady erosion of the All India United Democratic Front’s (AIUDF) organisational base, particularly in Srijangram Gaon Panchayat, long considered one of its strongholds.

More than 500 AIUDF leaders and workers from Merer Char Panchayat formally joined the Congress in a significant political shift that signals changing ground dynamics ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

Local party sources indicated that Merer Char Panchayat is now moving towards what leaders described as a “zero-AIUDF presence”, with multiple grassroots workers switching allegiance in recent days.

Discontent within the AIUDF ranks appears to have intensified following claims of a tacit understanding between party chief Badruddin Ajmal and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Several defectors cited this alleged development as a key reason for their exit, expressing dissatisfaction over what they termed a breach of political trust.

Congress leaders, meanwhile, attributed the influx to the party’s stated policies and outreach efforts, claiming that workers from different political backgrounds are joining the organisation on a daily basis across the region.

The mass joining programme took place on the evening of March 26 during the inauguration of the election campaign office of Congress candidate Nurul Islam in Kushbari, under Merer Char Panchayat. The event drew a large crowd, with party leaders projecting it as a sign of growing support at the grassroots level.
