AIUDF said Hindus and Muslims won't vote, but I am both religious and spiritual: Gaurav Gogoi

In a candid conversation on India Today’s exclusive podcast hosted by journalist Preeti Choudhry, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi strongly rebutted recent claims made by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal. Ajmal had asserted that neither Hindus nor Muslims would vote for Gogoi in the upcoming elections.

When asked about Ajmal's remarks and whether they impact his appeal among Hindu or Muslim voters, Gogoi responded with composure. “I am someone who enjoys visiting places of worship across different faiths and observing their traditions. I am both religious and spiritual. I pray regularly,” he said.

Gogoi emphasized the inclusive nature of his beliefs, saying, “Since a young age, I have prayed to Guru Nanak, visited churches, temples, and mosques. To me, prayer is about becoming a better human being and creating a better world—it’s the form that differs, not the essence.”

Highlighting his personal spiritual practices, he said, “I love visiting Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Kalibari Mandir, or mosques in Assam. That is who I am.”

Taking a subtle but firm dig at Ajmal’s remarks, Gogoi added, “The people of Assam are transparent. It is up to them to decide. I am not going to alter my beliefs to satisfy political leaders. I don’t need their certificate.”
