Ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya said that his party is willing to reduce the number of seats it contests to avoid a division of votes that could benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking to the media, Barbhuiya stated, “When the BJP came into power, to stop them, we reduced our seats. This time, during the core committee meeting, a decision was made to contest in fewer seats, so that the BJP does not gain any advantage.”
He further added that even if Congress chooses not to form an alliance with AIUDF, the party will take independent responsibility to prevent the BJP’s return to power. “To stop the BJP, we will not contest on so many seats that the BJP wins due to the division of votes,” he remarked.
The statement signals AIUDF’s readiness to adopt a more flexible electoral approach and may influence opposition unity efforts as the state heads toward polls.
