‘Ajmal is Himanta’s 108’: Gaurav Gogoi attacks Assam CM over alleged AIUDF support in Rajya Sabha polls

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on March 6 launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of indulging in “opportunistic politics” by allegedly seeking support from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) during the Rajya Sabha elections.

Addressing reporters, Gogoi said that the BJP’s attempt to secure support from the AIUDF for the third Rajya Sabha seat exposes contradictions in the Chief Minister’s political stand. He alleged that Sarma had for years dragged the AIUDF into Assam’s political discourse, frequently invoking issues such as “Miya” and illegal immigration to divide Assamese society.

According to Gogoi, the same party that the BJP had portrayed as its political adversary was now being considered for support during the Rajya Sabha polls. “Politics in Assam has gone to the lowest level because of a person like Himanta Biswa Sarma,” he said, adding that many people feel embarrassed about the state’s political environment when they travel outside Assam.

Reiterating his earlier remark, Gogoi said AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal acts as the Chief Minister’s “108”, implying that Ajmal is always ready to assist Sarma whenever required. He added that if the BJP genuinely considers Ajmal an opponent, Sarma should openly say so during the party’s outreach campaigns, such as the Jana Ashirwad Yatra.

Meanwhile, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi also criticised the BJP and said that four opposition parties have now come together, sending a clear message that they aim to defeat the BJP through unity. He expressed hope that more political parties would join the alliance in the coming days.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi said the alliance is preparing strategies to take national issues to the people of Assam and claimed that public support is gradually building to permanently remove the BJP from power in the state. He also alleged that the BJP managed to survive politically in Assam because of the AIUDF, describing Ajmal as an “agent of the BJP”.

Taking a dig at the ruling party’s campaign, he said the BJP’s political outreach should be called a “curse yatra” rather than a blessing yatra. He further accused those who claim to do politics in the name of cow protection of being involved in cases related to the theft of Gir cows.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi also alleged that the BJP government failed to deliver justice in connection with singer Zubeen Garg, and said that under such circumstances, the ruling party’s yatra cannot be described as a “blessing yatra.”
