AJP alleges political conspiracy behind Zubeen Garg’s death, demands Supreme Court monitored probe

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) Secretary Chittaranjan Basumatary has alleged a deep political conspiracy behind the mysterious death of Assam’s beloved singer, Zubeen Garg, calling for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the matter.

Addressing the media on Saturday, October 4 Basumatary said that emerging reports hinting that Zubeen Garg may have been poisoned and murdered have left the people of Assam both “shocked and heartbroken.”

“Reports suggesting that Zubeen Garg was poisoned and murdered have deeply hurt and shocked us,” Basumatary stated, adding that the entire episode has taken a “disturbing political turn.”

Basumatary sharply criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that the CM has “politicized a sensitive issue” and failed in his responsibilities towards the late artist.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma has politicized a sensitive matter by raising irrelevant issues at a time when the state is grieving. He even failed to arrange a flight to bring Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains back to Assam, despite earlier promises to send a cabinet minister for the purpose,” he remarked.

The AJP leader also condemned the arrangements made during the tribute ceremony for Zubeen Garg, calling them “mismanaged and insensitive.”

“The arrangements to pay homage to Zubeen Garg were mishandled. Over 100 of his supporters seeking justice are languishing in jail, while those truly responsible remain untouched,” he alleged.

Basumatary further accused the government of selective arrests and political interference in the ongoing investigation. He claimed that Chief Minister Sarma used “fear tactics,” citing Nepal, and interfered in legal proceedings by avoiding the arrest of Siddharth Sharma in Delhi despite knowing his whereabouts.

He went on to allege that during the Special Investigation Team (SIT) searches at Shyamkanu Mahanta’s residence, individuals close to the Chief Minister were present and that some crucial documents were deliberately hidden to protect Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

“Zubeen Garg’s family is now even afraid to receive the post-mortem report. This itself reveals how politicized and pressured the situation has become,” Basumatary said.

He questioned the Chief Minister’s integrity, stating that two of the accused were detained together during the Puja season, raising doubts about fairness in the probe.

“If Zubeen Garg was truly respected by the state, why were his concerns ignored, and those actions he disapproved of silenced?” he asked.

The AJP Secretary alleged that political interference extended beyond the investigation, claiming that attempts were made to “weaken Zubeen Garg’s influence through agents planted around him.”

Concluding his statement, Basumatary demanded justice for the late singer and accountability from those in power.

“The government must explain why the Chief Minister’s family repeatedly interfered in this case, why those responsible have not yet been brought to justice, and why Zubeen Garg was never accorded the Bharat Ratna,” he said.

He also accused the Chief Minister of allowing Shyamkanu Mahanta to gain undue control over cultural syndicates after coming to power, and urged the Supreme Court to constitute a commission to uncover the truth behind Zubeen Garg’s death.
