Akhil Gogoi says Congress failed to do justice to Rejaul Karim Sarkar

Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi on January 16 said the Congress failed to do justice to Rejaul Karim Sarkar, reacting to the former All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) president’s resignation from the party.

Addressing a massive workers’ meeting and public rally of the Raijor Dal at Joypur Bazaar under the Jaleswar constituency in Goalpara district, Gogoi said the Congress should have handled the issue with greater sensitivity and internal deliberation.

“Congress did not do justice to Rejaul Karim Sarkar. When a prominent leader from the minority community joins the party, he should be given due respect and accommodated within the organisation. However, I do not support the statement made by Rejaul Karim Sarkar regarding Sivasagar. Whether it was intentional or a slip of the tongue, the Congress should have investigated the matter instead of pressurising him, which eventually led to his resignation. This is not a democratic way of functioning,” Akhil Gogoi said.

He added that Sarkar, as a representative of the minority community, deserved to be treated with dignity and respect within the party framework. Gogoi’s remarks come amid ongoing political churn in Assam following Sarkar’s exit from the Congress, which has triggered wider debate over minority representation, internal party democracy, and leadership accountability.

The programme at Joypur Bazaar witnessed a large turnout of Raijor Dal workers and supporters and focused on strengthening the party’s organisational presence in the Jaleswar constituency, alongside discussions on key political developments in the state.
