Akhil Gogoi slams Congress over alliance delay, says Raijor Dal suffered due to ‘historical betrayal’
Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress, alleging that the party’s actions amounted to a “historical betrayal” that caused significant political loss to Raijor Dal ahead of the upcoming elections.
Speaking to the media in Sivasagar, Gogoi claimed that Congress kept his party waiting for nearly 45 days during discussions on a possible alliance, which he said severely affected Raijor Dal’s preparations. He stated that the experience has led his party to reassess its political strategy going forward.
Commenting on candidate selection, Gogoi said that Raijor Dal is preparing to field candidates in several constituencies. However, he noted that the party has deliberately refrained from fielding a candidate against Gaurav Gogoi, adding that the decision was taken to avoid creating difficulties for opposition forces while focusing on defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Gogoi also criticised the Election Commission of India over the election schedule, arguing that covering 126 constituencies within 21 days would be extremely difficult for opposition parties. He alleged that the decision appears to favour the BJP and called for reconsideration of the schedule.
The Raijor Dal leader further said that the breakdown of alliances has opened up new political opportunities for his party, with several new members expressing interest in joining. He expressed confidence that Raijor Dal will strengthen its voter base and retain strong support in Sivasagar.
He also warned that candidates from the BJP or the Asom Gana Parishad would face defeat in the constituency. Referring to possible contenders like Pradip Hazarika, Gogoi claimed that the leader had little to show in terms of achievements over the past two decades.
During the same programme, Gogoi also announced plans to lay the foundation stone for a new Assembly building in Sivasagar, a project estimated to cost Rs 12.23 crore, which he said would help strengthen local infrastructure and public facilities in the constituency.
