Allegations of sale of unauthorised medicines spark row at Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Assam's Tinsukia

A Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Assam's Tinsukia district has come under scrutiny after a local advocate alleged that the outlet was selling medicines not permitted under the government's affordable medicine scheme.

The allegations pertain to the Jan Aushadhi Kendra located at Napukhuri in Tinsukia. The advocate claimed that the centre, which is meant to provide low-cost generic medicines to the public, has been operating in violation of the scheme's guidelines by selling unauthorised medicines.

According to the advocate, Jan Aushadhi Kendras are authorised to stock and sell only government-approved generic medicines. However, the outlet allegedly sold medicines that are not permitted under the scheme, thereby violating the prescribed norms.

Demanding an inquiry, the advocate alleged that the objective of the government initiative was being defeated through such practices.

"The Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra was established to provide affordable medicines to the public. However, activities contrary to that objective are taking place here. Medicines are allegedly being sold in violation of government rules. I demand a thorough investigation into the matter," the advocate said.

The allegations have sparked concern in the district, with questions being raised over compliance with the operational guidelines governing Jan Aushadhi Kendras. The matter has also brought the role of the authorities responsible for monitoring the scheme under focus.
