Allegations surface against BJP’s Kushal Dowari over nomination affidavit in Assam's Sivasagar
Fresh controversy has emerged around the nomination of BJP candidate Kushal Dowari from the Sivasagar Assembly constituency, after Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi raised serious allegations regarding discrepancies in his affidavit.
Gogoi submitted a formal complaint with supporting documents at the District Commissioner’s office, seeking cancellation of Dowari’s nomination. The complaint was also backed by Gogoi’s personal assistant, Amlanjyoti Gogoi, who addressed the media and demanded appropriate action as per election rules.
According to the Raijor Dal, Dowari allegedly provided misleading information in his affidavit by failing to disclose the latest status of a criminal case registered in 2009 at Bokakhat Police Station (Case No. 42/2009).
The written complaint states that the case was filed under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, in connection with an incident of fishing in a protected area of Kaziranga in 2010. The Golaghat Additional Sessions Court had reportedly sentenced Dowari to two years of imprisonment in the case.
However, the affidavit submitted by Dowari does not mention whether he obtained any relief from the High Court or the Supreme Court against the conviction. The complainants argue that such omission amounts to suppression of material facts.
Citing Election Commission guidelines, which mandate full disclosure and warn of cancellation in cases of false or incomplete information, the Raijor Dal has urged authorities to reject Dowari’s nomination.
The matter is now under scrutiny, with the final decision expected to follow the Election Commission’s rules and verification process.
