Amritpal Singh appears virtually in Dibrugarh court, bail granted in jail device recovery case

Lok Sabha MP Amritpal Singh on April 24 appeared virtually before a court in Dibrugarh in connection with Case No. 21/2024, registered in the district following the alleged recovery of an electronic device from his room inside Dibrugarh Central Jail.

According to his counsel, Jasbir Kaur, the case was initiated after Jail Superintendent Nipen Das lodged a complaint regarding the recovery of the device. The matter concerns detainees who had earlier been brought to Dibrugarh Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA).

Speaking to reporters, Kaur said a chargesheet had already been filed in the matter, following which a bail petition was moved before the court. She stated that bail has been granted, although the bond has not yet been submitted.

The lawyer added that trial proceedings are continuing before Judicial Magistrate First Class Chandan Saikia of the Dibrugarh Court.

She further said that some associates of Amritpal Singh had been shifted to jails in Punjab, while Amritpal Singh himself joined the hearing virtually from Dibrugarh Police Station.

Kaur said the hearing in the matter is continuing and that Amritpal Singh is expected to be shifted back to Dibrugarh Central Jail on Saturday.

Amritpal Singh and several of his associates were detained under the NSA in 2023 following a crackdown by Punjab Police, and were later lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under heightened security arrangements.
