Annual 3-day Jonbeel mela kicks off at Assam's Jagiroad

The three-day historic Jonbeel Mela, a symbol of cultural unity and tradition, began today at Jagiroad, Assam. Set against the scenic backdrop of Jonbeel, the event is expected to attract participants and visitors from across the region.

The inaugural day commenced with ceremonial rituals and prayers at the Charibhai Deosal Shiva Temple, performed by Gobha Deoraj and royal officials. This age-old tradition marks the beginning of a unique cultural exchange between the hill and plain communities.

On the first day, representatives from the hills, traditionally referred to as "Mama-Mami," will make their way to the plains. Tomorrow, they will participate in the highlight of the mela—a traditional barter system with the plainspeople, preserving an ancient mode of trade. The festivities will also feature community fishing and a traditional cockfight, adding to the vibrancy of the event.

In a significant gesture, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to attend the mela today, January 16. During his visit, he will present royal honorariums to 22 Tiwa kings, reinforcing the state’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

The Jonbeel Mela continues to be a testament to Assam’s diverse traditions and communal harmony, drawing locals and visitors alike into its historical and cultural essence.
