Any improvement in India-China Ties?: Congress leader Aminul Islam questions BRICS agenda

Congress leader Aminul Islam questioned the outcome of the BRICS Summit for India, asking whether the meeting has addressed key concerns in India-China relations and other pressing geopolitical issues, including the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking in Guwahati, Islam questioned whether there had been any substantive discussion on the state of India-China relations, including the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. He also raised concerns over the reported decline in the Brahmaputra's water level, which he claimed had fallen by 40 per cent since 2022.

“Are there any better situations in Indo-China relations? Is there any discussion on the Galwan situation, or how the water level in the Brahmaputra has dropped by 40 per cent since 2022?” Islam said.

He said discussions at the BRICS Summit should focus on issues directly affecting India's strategic and national interests, particularly its relations with China.

Islam also referred to the presence of the Iranian President at the summit and questioned whether India had held discussions with Iran on developments concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy and shipping route.

The Congress leader further criticised the government's foreign policy, alleging that India's international relations had deteriorated in recent years.

“Our Prime Minister is just taking photos. India's international relations are basically very bad now. Foreign policy is gradually deteriorating,” he said.

Islam questioned whether the BRICS Summit would deliver any tangible benefits for India and said the government should make its outcomes clear.

“That is why the question is whether the BRICS Summit brings something positive for India or not. That should be made clear first,” he said.
