Armed thief holds sword to woman’s neck, loots gold jewellery worth over Rs 3 lakh in Assam's Moran
A sensational burglary was reported at Purani Balai village near Moran, where an armed thief allegedly entered a house in the early hours and looted gold jewellery worth more than Rs 3 lakh after threatening a woman with a sword.
The incident took place at the residence of Ruby Hazarika at around 2:30 am. According to the family, the thief entered the house through a window and broke into the room of one of the daughters-in-law.
The accused allegedly opened a Godrej almirah and stole gold rings, a chain and earrings, with the total value of the jewellery estimated at over Rs 3 lakh.
After leaving the first room, the thief reportedly entered another room, where another daughter-in-law woke up after hearing noises. When she came face-to-face with the intruder, the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp sword and threatened her to remain silent.
The thief fled from the house after the incident. Hearing the family members' cries for help, neighbours rushed to the spot, but the accused managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
Local residents said incidents of cattle theft have been reported frequently in the area, including during the daytime. However, the alleged involvement of an armed thief in the latest incident has caused concern among villagers.
The victimised family has lodged an FIR at the Lepetkata Police Outpost, and police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the accused.
