Army conducts flag march in Kokrajhar as authorities step up security, situation remains under control
The Indian Army conducted a flag march across sensitive pockets of Kokrajhar district on Wednesday, January 21, as security agencies and the district administration intensified measures to maintain law and order.
The flag march was carried out in vulnerable areas including Karigaon, Awdang Bazar and Mashing Road, aimed at reassuring residents and asserting the administration’s readiness to deal with any untoward situation. Officials said the exercise was part of a broader precautionary strategy in response to the prevailing situation in the district.
As a humanitarian and preventive step, the district administration has set up three temporary relief camps at Awdang Bazar, Karigaon Bazar and Karigaon Primary School. According to official sources, members of the Bodo community have been accommodated at the Awdang Bazar camp, while Santhal families have been provided shelter at the camps in Karigaon.
Approximately 1,200 people have so far taken refuge in these temporary shelters, where basic facilities are being ensured by the administration.
To maintain peace and deter any disturbance, a heavy security deployment has been put in place in the Karigaon area, involving personnel from the Indian Army, Assam Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF). Senior civil and police officials are closely monitoring developments on the ground, with continuous surveillance in sensitive locations.
Inspector General of Police (Border), Kokrajhar, Vivekraj Singh, said the situation is currently under control and appealed to residents to remain calm. He urged the public to cooperate with security forces and the administration to ensure peace and normalcy in the district.
