Artificial flooding hits 20 villages in Assam's Rupohihat as water channels blocked by alleged encroachments

Around 20 villages under the Rupohihat Revenue Circle are reportedly facing severe artificial flooding following allegations of encroachment and construction over natural water channels and drainage routes.

 

Local residents allege that several earasuti (natural water channels), culverts and drainage pathways have been blocked by dumping soil and carrying out construction activities. Large RCC buildings and shops have reportedly been constructed after obstructing these natural water outlets, preventing rainwater from flowing out normally.

 

One such alleged construction is located barely 500 metres from the Rupohihat Revenue Circle Office, where a large water channel has reportedly been blocked and construction work carried out.

 

Residents have questioned the role of the administration, alleging that despite the location being in close proximity to the revenue circle office, no significant action or investigation has been initiated so far.

 

The alleged blockage of drainage channels has resulted in water accumulating in several areas, affecting residential houses, roads, agricultural land and daily movement. With around 20 villages reportedly facing the impact of artificial flooding, residents say the situation has created serious hardship during the rainy season.

 

Local residents have urged the administration to immediately clear blocked water channels and drainage routes, conduct an inquiry into the alleged encroachments and take strict action against unauthorised constructions.

 

Questions are now being raised over how such construction activities could allegedly continue just 500 metres from the Rupohihat Revenue Circle Office without attracting administrative attention.
