Artificial flooding wreaks havoc in Nagaon village, farmers lose paddy crop

A severe waterlogging situation caused by alleged obstruction of drainage channels has affected Kaliadinga village in Juria in Assam’s Nagaon district, damaging paddy fields and inundating several houses, residents said.

The accumulation of rainwater has rendered several bighas of paddy fields submerged, leaving farmers worried about the loss of their standing crop. Water has also entered several houses in the village, with residents reporting knee-deep water inside their homes.

According to residents, eight culverts had been constructed in the area to facilitate the drainage of excess water. However, they alleged that some of the culverts have been blocked by individuals for personal interests, restricting the flow of rainwater.

The residents also alleged that the embankments of fishery ponds in the area had been raised, further blocking the natural drainage channels and leaving the accumulated water with no outlet.

Several important roads in the area have also been inundated, disrupting vehicular movement and causing difficulties for residents.

The affected villagers said they had repeatedly brought the matter to the notice of the local authorities and administration through written and verbal complaints. However, they alleged that no effective action had been taken so far.

The residents have urged the administration to immediately clear the blocked culverts and restore the drainage channels to prevent further damage to agricultural land and residential areas.
