Assam: 108-year-old Tamarhat Durga Mandir gets new permanent structure

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 19 inaugurated the newly constructed permanent building of the historic Sarbajanin Durga Mandir at Tamarhat in Dhubri district, ahead of the 108th Durga Puja celebrations in the area.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief Hagrama Mohilary, Assam Cabinet Ministers Ashok Singhal and Aswini Ray Sarkar, besides other dignitaries.

The temple has been associated with the religious and cultural life of Tamarhat for more than a century. The new permanent structure was completed ahead of this year's Durga Puja celebrations.

Recalling his earlier visit to Tamarhat, Sarma said he had visited the area in 2021 when construction of the temple had just begun.

“I came to Tamarhat in 2021 when the temple construction had just started. Now, returning, the temple construction is complete,” he said.

Sarma described the newly constructed temple as “wonderful” and praised its architectural and aesthetic appeal. He said temples of such scale and design were not commonly seen in many parts of Assam and expressed hope that similar structures would come up elsewhere in the state.

During his visit, local residents also raised several development-related issues with the Chief Minister.

Among the demands were construction of a bridge over the Gangadhar river connecting Tamarhat with Kathaltali, improvement of the local hospital and construction of a new commercial complex.

“The locals have brought a few issues to my attention, such as the need for a bridge over the Gangadhar river, hospital improvements, and a new commercial complex. We will definitely consider these requests,” Sarma said.
