Assam: 11 shops burgled overnight at Bhauraguri market, locals blame police negligence

In a major security lapse, 11 shops were burglarized in a single night at the Bhauraguri market under Gossaigaon subdivision, with residents blaming the police for gross negligence.

The thefts took place late last night amid heavy rainfall, which the burglars reportedly used to their advantage. Shops targeted included an electronics store, a pharmacy, a newspaper stand, a tea stall, a hardware shop, a mobile store, and several garment outlets — all located within close proximity of the Bhauraguri Police Outpost.

Eyewitnesses and shop owners expressed outrage, saying no police patrol was conducted in the area during the night. “How can such a massive theft take place just steps away from the police outpost?” asked one of the affected shopkeepers.

Residents accused the local police of complete irresponsibility and demanded immediate action and accountability. “This could have been prevented with even minimal patrolling,” another resident remarked.

In response, the Bhauraguri police arrived at the scene in the morning and began collecting CCTV footage from the affected shops. They have assured an ongoing investigation, though no arrests have been reported as of yet.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over the security arrangements in the area, especially given the strategic location of the market and its proximity to law enforcement.
