An 11-year-old student, Satyajit Das (also known as Biki) tragically died after an RE panel used in the four-lane road construction fell on him near the Namdang stone bridge in Gaurisagar, Sivasagar district.
The incident occurred while work was underway on the road project. Witnesses say the boy was standing on the roadside when the heavy panel collapsed onto him. Local people immediately rescued the critically injured child and sent him to the hospital.
Although he was rushed to Sivasagar Civil Hospital, doctors there referred him to Assam Medical College. However, in critical condition, he was instead admitted to the Sukapha Multi-Speciality Hospital in Demow, where doctors declared him dead.
The construction work at the site is being carried out by Bharat Banijya and Akshara, companies awarded the contract for building the four-lane road from Namdang Stone Bridge to Sivasagar’s Pragati Chariali. Residents allege that the companies have been operating without any safety signboards or adequate protective measures at the site.
Local people say they had long complained about unsafe practices in the construction zones. The death of the young student has sparked anger and grief among residents, who are demanding accountability for the tragic incident.
