Assam: 11-year-old sexually assaulted in Margherita, accused turned over to police
An 11-year-old girl in Margherita, Assam, has been sexually assaulted by a man who allegedly gained the family’s trust before committing the crime, local authorities and residents said on Saturday, June 6.
Police and eyewitnesses identified the accused as 28-year-old Raju Khan (age as reported by locals). According to complaints filed with Margherita police, the man first befriended the child’s father and began visiting the family’s home regularly. Neighbours and relatives told investigators that Khan used money and gifts to ingratiate himself with the parents and ultimately abused the girl inside the house in Sidehing Agbandha village.
The crime came to light after the child’s health deteriorated recently and local women raised concerns. When neighbours questioned the family, they learned the extent of the alleged abuse and alerted residents and police. Angered by the revelation, a group of villagers overpowered Khan, beat him and handed him to Margherita police, who took him into custody and registered a case.
Margherita police confirmed they have opened an investigation under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code. Medical examinations and forensic procedures are being carried out as part of the probe, a police spokesperson said. Authorities declined to release further details about the victim given her age and the sensitive nature of the case.
Local leaders and child-protection activists condemned the attack and called for swift prosecution and stronger community safeguards. “This is a tragic breach of trust,” a resident who asked not to be named told reporters. “We demand strict legal action and better protection for children in our villages.”
Margherita Superintendent of Police (SP) said the accused was in police custody and assured that the investigation would be fast-tracked. The SP added that police are conducting inquiries into how the man became close to the family and whether others were involved or aware of the abuse.
The incident has provoked widespread outrage across Assam, with social media and regional politicians urging immediate action. Child-rights groups urged authorities to ensure the survivor receives comprehensive medical care, psychological support and protection during the legal process.
