The Morigaon District Education Department distributed educational qualification certificates to 27 inmates of Morigaon District Jail, marking a significant milestone in prison education under the "Ullas" initiative of the Nav Bharat Literacy Mission.
To ensure education for incarcerated individuals, the district administration, in collaboration with prison authorities, established a study center within the jail premises. The initiative aims to eradicate illiteracy and integrate inmates into the world of education, ultimately helping them become responsible citizens. As part of the program, four educated inmates were assigned as volunteer teachers to assist fellow prisoners in their studies.
In a landmark achievement, 27 inmate students appeared for the examination for the first time and successfully passed with commendable results. To honor their efforts, an official certificate distribution ceremony was held on Wednesday at the jail's study center under the supervision of Nav Bharat Literacy Mission coordinators Moushumi Barkakati, Bandana Devi, and Tripti Deka.
The event was graced by Morigaon District and Sessions Judge Ramen Baruah as the chief guest, along with Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma, Additional Commissioner Anusuya Sharma, Jail Superintendent Manas Kumar Das, Jailor Monami Hujuri, District School Inspector Apurba Thakuria, and District Planning Officer Rohini Dutta. Retired teacher Manmohan Rajbanshi was also present to witness the inmates receiving their educational certificates.
Meanwhile, 45 more inmate students have enrolled for the upcoming examination, as confirmed by the District School Inspector.
