Assam: 56-year-old man arrested for alleged sexual assault of seven year old girl in Gossaigaon
A 56-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl in Assam’s Gossaigaon on February 15.
According to police reports, the accused, identified as Samsul Haque (56), allegedly lured the minor girl to his residence at approximately 10:00 am today under false pretenses. It was within the premises of his home that the alleged assault took place. As news of the horrific crime spread through the village, the atmosphere turned volatile.
In the immediate aftermath, an agitated mob of local residents gathered at the suspect's property. Driven by anger, the crowd proceeded to vandalize Haque's house, demanding immediate justice.
The situation necessitated a high-level police intervention to maintain law and order. Senior officials, including Aziza Gulenur, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) for Kokrajhar district, alongside Gossaigaon Sub-divisional Police Officer Monturam Bora and Rajiv Kalita, In-charge of the Sapakata Police Outpost, rushed to the scene. Law enforcement successfully managed to contain the unrest and took Haque into custody before further violence could ensue.
The victim is reportedly receiving medical attention, and the police have initiated a formal investigation under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act.
Local community leaders and residents have collectively voiced their demand for a fast-track trial and the harshest possible legal punishment for the perpetrator. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm while the legal process takes its course.
