Assam: 72 fall ill, 15 critical after consuming prasad at Vishwakarma Puja in Jonai

A festive celebration turned into a medical emergency as around 72 individuals fell seriously ill after partaking in the Prasad of Vishwakarma Puja in Simen Chapori Village, Jonai. Of those affected, 15 individuals have been referred to the Model Hospital in Silapathar for advanced treatment due to their critical condition.

The incident unfolded on September 18 when the villagers gathered to celebrate Vishwakarma Puja as part of the public festivities during the water supply scheme inauguration in Loklung Village. Following the consumption of the Prasad from this puja, several individuals experienced symptoms including vomiting, dizziness, flatulence, and fever during the night.

Of particular concern is the condition of eight children and two pregnant women who are currently receiving medical care in critical condition.

The affected individuals were admitted to Dekapam Sub-Health Centre. However, due to the severity of their conditions, 15 patients were referred to the Model Hospital in Silapathar to receive more specialized treatment. The remaining victims of the poisoning are receiving medical attention at government schools within the village.
