Assam: AAMSU stages protest against eviction drives in state, submits memorandum

The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) today staged a two-hour sit-in protest at Gandhi Park in Kokrajhar, denouncing the state government’s ongoing eviction drives across several districts.

The Kokrajhar district unit of AAMSU led the demonstration as part of a state-wide agitation held simultaneously in multiple district headquarters. The protests were sparked by recent eviction operations in Goalpara (Hasilabeel), Mukalmua, and Bongaigaon—regions where hundreds of families, according to AAMSU, were evicted without due notice or alternative rehabilitation.

Protesters carried placards and banners accusing the state government of executing “inhumane eviction policies,” and raised slogans demanding justice for displaced residents. The atmosphere remained charged throughout the two-hour sit-in as students and community members voiced their grievances.

As the protest concluded, AAMSU Kokrajhar submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the office of the District Commissioner. The memorandum urged the government to halt eviction activities and ensure humane treatment and fair rehabilitation of displaced families.

The protest aligns with a broader outcry that has gained political momentum. Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia also weighed in, urging the Chief Minister to immediately stop eviction efforts in Goalpara’s Hasilabeel, where 667 families reportedly received notices despite lacking alternative shelter.

The unfolding eviction crisis continues to draw sharp reactions from student bodies, civil society organizations, and opposition leaders, who accuse the government of ignoring the plight of marginalized communities.
