Assam: ABSU withdraws deadline for BPF–UPPL merger, keeps unification issue on hold

The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on Sunday announced the withdrawal of the deadline it had earlier set for the proposed unification of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

Speaking at a press conference held at the Bodoland Guest House in Bennibari, ABSU president Dipen Boro said that despite repeated efforts, the merger could not materialize within the stipulated time frame.

“The deadline given by ABSU to both parties for unification has now been withdrawn,” Boro declared.

The announcement came after a meeting attended by ABSU along with 16 other allied organizations. Boro noted that while UPPL president Pramod Boro and the participating organizations had responded positively to the appeal for unity, BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary did not extend support to the process.

“In the absence of a consensus, ABSU has decided to temporarily keep the merger issue on hold,” the ABSU president added.

The statement marks a significant development in Bodoland’s political discourse, where calls for unification between the two key regional forces had raised expectations of a consolidated front.
