Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap has been granted bail by the Court of the Sessions Judge in Kamrup district in connection with the death of student Samiul Haque, who lost his life after being struck by her speeding vehicle on July 25.
Senior advocate Bijon Mahajan represented Kashyap during the bail proceedings and presented arguments before the court.
Kashyap, who was earlier in police custody, had been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court on August 1. The court had then remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody.
During the hearing, the bench expressed deep dissatisfaction with the role of the investigating authorities, particularly the Guwahati traffic police. The court questioned the credibility of the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) report filed in the case, raising doubts over its authenticity. “How is it possible to prepare an MVI report in just 28 minutes?” the bench observed, strongly criticising the police for lapses in the investigation.
The incident had triggered statewide outrage after Samiul, a student, sustained critical injuries in the accident and succumbed shortly after. Public anger had mounted over allegations of reckless driving and concerns over accountability in handling the probe.
The case continues to remain under public and judicial scrutiny, with calls for a fair and transparent investigation into the circumstances leading to the tragic loss of life.
