Assam: After 77 years after independence, locals still use makeshift bamboo bridge in Dibrugarh LS constituency

Despite 77 years of independence, individuals continue to traverse the Buridehing River using a makeshift bamboo bridge at Tirap Mukh on a daily basis in the 83rd Margherita Assembly constituency.

This is the reality for locals, who are compelled to risk their lives due to the lack of a permanent bridge.

On the otherhand, soil erosion has emerged as a significant issue for residents living near the Buridehing and Tirap rivers in the 83rd Margherita Constituency.

This problem has resulted in the loss of over 1000 bighas of agricultural land.

Despite the severity of the situation, Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, officials from the Margherita Sub-Divisional Administration (Civil) and the Irrigation Department of the Assam government have allegedly not implemented any measures to address this issue.

Thamai Chakap Sonar, a permanent resident of the 2nd Maulang Reserve of Hamukjan Gaon Panchayat, expressed his concerns.

He stated that despite 77 years of independence, they still cross the Buridehing river using a makeshift bamboo bridge at Tirap Mukh Paar Ghar daily.

This area is home to 360 houses in the 2nd Maulang Reserve and Nonglai Kuhiabari, all inhabited by cultivators.

Unfortunately, due to the annual monsoons, the erosion problem has intensified, leading to the loss of more agricultural land.

Despite repeated attempts to engage with the Margherita Sub-Divisional Administration, their pleas have gone unheard, added Sonar.
