Assam: AIUDF campaign vehicle vandalised in Nagaon amid election tension

An AIUDF campaign vehicle was allegedly vandalised by unidentified miscreants on the Nagaon–Naltali state highway on Saturday night, October 3, triggering fresh tension in the constituency ahead of the October 6 Lok Sabha bypoll.

According to reports, the vehicle was travelling along the highway as part of the AIUDF's election campaign when it was allegedly attacked under the cover of darkness. The attackers reportedly damaged the vehicle before fleeing the area.

The incident comes as AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal intensified his campaign in the Nagaon constituency, where he is facing BJP candidate Devashish Sharma and Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora.

The latest attack has added another flashpoint to an already closely contested campaign, with the three principal candidates stepping up outreach ahead of polling.

Ajmal has also been at the centre of a separate controversy after BJP candidate Devashish Sharma filed an FIR against him at Nagaon Sadar Police Station on October 3. Sharma alleged that Ajmal made false and defamatory remarks against him during a campaign meeting, including allegedly referring to him as a “murderer”.

Reacting to the FIR, Ajmal said the complaint would work as a “blessing” for him ahead of the election.

“Filing an FIR is a blessing for me. The people of Nagaon will make me win by 10 lakh votes and take revenge for Devashish Sharma,” Ajmal said.

The Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll is scheduled for October 6, with counting of votes set for October 9.
