Assam: AJYCP flags ‘underdevelopment’, slams BJP-AGP of failing martyr Khargeswar Talukdar’s constituency
The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has criticised the BJP-AGP government over what it described as the continued underdevelopment of the home constituency of Swahid Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the Assam Agitation.
Addressing the media in Sarupeta on Wednesday, April 8, AJYCP Central General Secretary Bijon Bayan alleged that the government has failed to fulfil key development commitments in the Bhawanipur-Sarbhog Assembly constituency, formerly known as Bhawanipur. He claimed that the region, which holds historical significance as both the birthplace and martyrdom site of Talukdar, has not received adequate attention.
Bayan further alleged that the ruling alliance has politicised the legacy of the Assam Agitation while failing to deliver on promises made to the people of the area. He specifically criticised Minister Ranjit Kumar Das and MLA Phanidhar Talukdar, holding them accountable for the perceived lack of progress.
Highlighting a specific instance, Bayan referred to assurances made by former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Ranjit Kumar Das regarding the introduction of a science stream at BHB College in Sarupeta. The institution is associated with Khargeswar Talukdar, who studied there.
According to Bayan, despite repeated public commitments, the proposal has not been implemented. He stated that such delays reflect a broader pattern of unfulfilled promises in the constituency.
The AJYCP leader urged the government to prioritise development initiatives in historically significant regions and to honour commitments made to local communities.
