The Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Margherita Regional Committee, on Monday lodged a memorandum with the Margherita police station, voicing serious concerns over the unchecked proliferation of drugs and other intoxicating substances in the region.
The AJYCP highlighted that areas such as Bargolai, Ledo, and several other locations under the Margherita police station have become hotbeds of drug trafficking, posing a grave threat to the local youth. According to the student body, many educated youngsters are falling victim to addiction, jeopardizing their future.
Committee president Bimal Singh and general secretary Utpal Borah alleged that one individual, identified as Abhijit Changmai of Ledo, has been a persistent offender in the illegal trade. Despite being arrested a few years ago, they claimed, Changmai resumed drug peddling soon after his release from jail and has since continued to operate openly.
The AJYCP leaders accused both the Margherita police and local administration of failing to take concrete action against the accused, despite repeated complaints from concerned citizens. They asserted that Changmai’s activities have “ruined many youths” of the Margherita sub-division.
Through the memorandum, the AJYCP has demanded the immediate arrest of Abhijit Changmai and other drug peddlers, describing them as a “growing menace” that threatens the social fabric of the region.
