Members of the All Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a protest in Nagaon on Sunday against the state government’s decision to withdraw cases from the Foreigners Tribunal involving six individuals from different religious backgrounds.
The protestors accused the BJP-led government of harbouring a “pro-Bangladeshi character” and warned against turning Assam into a “dumping ground for foreigners.”
The demonstration saw tense moments in the Jur area when police tried to stop the AJYCP march. A scuffle broke out between protesters and law enforcement, resulting in the dismantling of police barricades. The protestors eventually took over the main road in Nagaon, disrupting traffic for a period.
AJYCP leaders criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for what they described as policies that favour illegal immigrants. They also condemned the state government for allegedly compromising Assam’s demographic security.
The withdrawal of the six tribunal cases has triggered sharp reactions among several Assamese nationalist organisations, who see the move as part of a larger political strategy ahead of elections. Police maintained a presence at the protest site to prevent further escalation.
