Assam: Akhil Gogoi dismisses rift in Opposition camp, advocates for 2026 unity

Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi dismissed claims of discord within the Opposition alliance, asserting that the discussion held at Sonapur was centered on strategizing for the 2026 elections. Addressing Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi’s reported frustration and walkout from the meeting, Gogoi remarked, “There was no situation that warranted his anger. Perhaps, due to his limited attendance in opposition meetings, he lacked experience in handling such discussions.”

Gogoi reaffirmed that opposition parties remain committed to uniting against the BJP, stating, “While differences in opinion emerged regarding the approach to counter the BJP, no insults were exchanged. The discussions revolved around each party's stance and strategy.” He further noted that seat-sharing negotiations were still underway, adding, “Raijor Dal holds strong grassroots support in Upper Assam and has been actively working at the organizational level. Compromises will be made in alliance talks, but not at the cost of complete surrender.”

Dispelling speculation regarding the upcoming Panchayat elections, he clarified, “There was no discussion on the matter. Assam Pradesh Congress President Bhupen Borah stated that any alliance at the Panchayat level would be determined at the district level.”

Gogoi also turned his attention to alleged internal conflicts within the ruling BJP, claiming that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP state president Dilip Saikia were engaged in a power struggle. He remarked, “There is a cold war between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dilip Saikia. Akash Phukan was once favored by the Chief Minister, but the day Dilip Saikia assumed the role of state president, Phukan was expelled.”

He criticized the media for selectively covering political developments, alleging, “While the media remains silent on the growing rift between the Chief Minister and the BJP’s state leadership, they are actively creating unnecessary chaos over the fact that 17 opposition parties have come together.”

Responding to Bhupen Borah’s social media post regarding the opposition alliance, Gogoi stated, “I am unaware of what he wrote, but there was no decision in yesterday’s meeting to contest elections separately.”

Addressing Rita Choudhury’s recent Facebook post, Gogoi expressed his admiration and respect for his former teacher. “Rita ma’am was my teacher, and I hold immense respect for her. However, as her husband is a BJP minister, I have been unable to maintain direct communication with her. I have no grievances against her, and if my words have caused her any hurt, I sincerely apologize.”
