Assam: Alleged land dispute triggers tension in South Kamrup village, farmer seeks justice

Allegations of forcible interference in the cultivation of agricultural land and the alleged burning of a farm shed have surfaced in Barbhita Kachari Gaon Char under the Goroimari Revenue Circle in Assam’s South Kamrup district, prompting a farmer to seek intervention from the state government and local authorities.
According to the complainant, Julu Sheikh, he had been cultivating agricultural land belonging to the families of Dipcharan Kalita, Sunil Kalita, Bhuben Kalita and Rohit Kalita for nearly 10 to 12 years on a lease and contract basis.
Sheikh alleged that the situation escalated after a group of persons, described by him as alleged land brokers and their associates, began showing interest in the land, where agricultural activities had been carried out for several years.
He alleged that on Sunday, Azahar Ali, Shahidul Haque, Hafizur Rahman, Siddique Ali, Jamal Uddin and several others arrived at the agricultural plot along with around 30 to 40 people and allegedly ploughed the field using tractors.
Sheikh further claimed that the landowners had been regularly paying land revenue and possessed documents relating to the property, but alleged that attempts were being made to interfere with the cultivation of the land.
In another allegation, Sheikh said a shed used to keep cattle and goats at the agricultural site was allegedly set on fire on Sunday night when no one was present there.
Following the incidents, Sheikh appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Circle Officer of the Goroimari Revenue Circle to intervene and take appropriate action in the matter.
The allegations could not be independently verified. The versions of the persons named in the allegations were not immediately available.
The matter is expected to be examined by the revenue authorities and police, particularly in view of the allegations concerning forcible cultivation, interference with agricultural activities and the reported burning of the farm shed.
