Assam: Alleged safety lapses during nitrogen gas unloading trigger panic in Nagaon's Samaguri
Panic gripped parts of Samaguri in Assam's Nagaon district after nitrogen gas began leaking at high pressure from a tanker while its contents were being transferred to another vehicle on National Highway 127.
The incident occurred when nitrogen was being unloaded from a capsule vehicle that had met with an accident two days ago and was reportedly in police custody.
The gas suddenly started escaping from the vehicle at high pressure, with the fumes entering nearby houses within moments. Alarmed by the leak, residents rushed out of their homes, triggering panic in the locality.
The vehicle reportedly belongs to an oxygen plant located at Gendhali in Samaguri. Allegations have emerged that the nitrogen was being transferred without adequate safety arrangements or protective measures.
Nitrogen is an asphyxiant gas that can displace oxygen in the surrounding air, creating a serious risk of suffocation, particularly in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.
Further details regarding the cause of the leak, possible injuries and the response of the authorities are awaited.
